A shipment of 23,000 tons of fertilizer donated to Zimbabwe has been fully discharged at the port of Beira in Mozambique, Russia's Uralchem Group, which is handling the shipment, said in a press release.
From the port, the shipment will be transported overland to landlocked Zimbabwe, the company added.
"The shipment, comprising potash and NPKS fertilizers, is the latest of the Group’s five humanitarian consignments sent to African nations to support productive and sustainable farming in order to alleviate the effects of an unprecedented global food crisis," the Uralchem Group said.
The company also emphasized that it intends to donate approximately 300,000 tons of fertilizer to developing countries facing severe food shortages.
"The initiative also supports efforts to meet UN Sustainable Development Goal #2 — 'End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture'," the statement said.
Since the end of 2022, Uralchem Group has successfully delivered more than 134,000 tonnes of fertilizers to Africa.
More than 111,000 tonnes of the volume was shipped with the help of the UN World Food Programme, which chartered ships to transport fertilizer from European ports and warehouses to Malawi, Kenya, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe, Uralchem noted.
At the end of January, the fertilizer producer announced the unloading of a humanitarian cargo of 34,000 tonnes of potash at the Nigerian port of Onne.
Last year, Uralchem shipped 20,000 tons of its products to Malawi and 34,000 tons to Kenya free of charge.
