Russian Natural Resources Ministry Offers Sierra Leone Partnership in Geology

In late September, Russia and Sierra Leone started talks on imports of Russian fertilizers to the African state, according to Sierra Leone's Foreign Minister Timothy Kabba, who added that he would visit Russia at the end of the year for further discussions. Along with agriculture, the two countries are boosting cooperation in the field of geology.

Russian Ministry of Natural Resources offered Sierra Leone cooperation in geology, subsoil use and search for groundwater, the ministry said in a statement.
Issues of bilateral cooperation were discussed at the meeting by the Head of the Ministry of Natural Resources Alexander Kozlov and the Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Mattai Julius Daniel.
According to Kozlov, the Russian side has already prepared a memorandum of understanding between the ministries.

"The key types of work within the framework of the memorandum can be: geological studies, regional geology and geological mapping, joint studies and development of mineral resources, the use of geophysical methods to detect mineral resources and, of course, groundwater, monitoring of the state of the subsoil and others," Kozlov said.

The minister of mines and mineral resources of Sierra Leone, in turn, noted that the subsoil of the African republic has reserves not only of diamonds and gold, but also other minerals, including cobalt, nickel and others. According to Daniel, the country needs expertise in the development of these reserves.
Other areas of cooperation between the two countries include agriculture, as Russian-Sierra Leonean talks on importing Russian fertilizers began in late September, according to the African country's minister Kabba.
Kabba also has noted that Sierra Leone will maintain good relations with Moscow regardless of Western sanctions.
