The chief Libyan prosecutor has launched an investigation into 16 current and former officials responsible for water resources and dam management over the deadly collapse of two dams near the eastern city of Derna.
"They are responsible for negligent execution of administrative and financial duties," the statement from the prosecutor general's office read.
The ex-mayor of Derna is one of the suspects under investigation.
Last week, protests took place in the flood-hit Libyan city of Derna, turning up in the city council's dissolution, Libyan newspaper Al-Marsad reported.
Torrential rains brought by Storm Daniel hit Libya on September 10. They caused destructive flooding in the country's east, where the cities of Susah and Derna were declared natural disaster zones.
The Libyan Red Crescent estimates that the death toll from this month's flash floods in the North African country has exceeded 11,000, with a further 20,000 reported missing. The UN’s International Organization for Migration says that more than 43,000 people have been displaced by the storm.
