Algeria Decides to Open Airspace for Quake Relief Flights to Morocco

CAIRO (Sputnik) – Late Friday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center said that a 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit Morocco 77 kilometers (48 miles) southwest of the city of Marrakesh with a population of 839,000 people.

Algeria decided to open its airspace for flights carrying humanitarian aid and people injured in a deadly earthquake in neighboring Morocco, the office of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said on Saturday.
According to the latest reports, the death toll from the disaster reached 1,037, while another 1,204 people have been injured.
"The Algerian authorities have also decided to open the airspace to flights carrying humanitarian aid, injured people and victims," the presidential office said in a statement, adding that Algiers expressed "full readiness to provide humanitarian assistance and all material and human capacities in solidarity with the Moroccan people."

In August 2021, Algeria announced that it was severing diplomatic ties with Morocco due to the neighbor's "hostile actions" since the day of independence. Rabat responded by slamming the move as "unjustified and regrettable." The two North African nations have long been at odds over the control of Western Sahara.
