Tanzania & UN Development Program Commit $2M to Fund 49 Community-Led Environmental Projects

The joint initiative is expected to benefit 6,000 people across mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, prioritizing grassroots solutions to local ecological challenges.

Key details:

The current country strategy, running through 2028, prioritizes the Serengeti ecosystem, central Tanzania (particularly Dodoma), and Zanzibar's Jozani ecosystem. It also reserves 30% of resources for projects outside these core areas.

The 49 organizations were selected from more than 800 applicants due to their strong grassroots connections and ability to translate local knowledge into practical solutions, according to UNDP Resident Representative Shigeki Komatsubara.

The government maintained its financial contribution despite declining international funding to ensure communities continue to benefit, Richard Muyungi, Permanent Secretary in the Vice President's Office, emphasized.

Muyungi urged the beneficiaries to ensure transparency and proper use of funds, stressing that community ownership is key to the long-term sustainability of the projects.
