Digital technology is changing how healthcare is delivered, making it possible for patients to access medical expertise beyond traditional hospital settings. Across Africa, telemedicine and AI are opening new opportunities to improve healthcare access, strengthen medical systems and address longstanding challenges in service delivery.
Kenya is among the countries advancing this transformation, supported by its growing technology ecosystem, mobile-based services and efforts to establish a framework for digital healthcare. Its experience offers lessons for other African countries seeking to harness technology to improve healthcare delivery. To examine Kenya’s progress and what it could mean for the rest of the continent, Global South Pole spoke with Dr. Charles Kamotho, a Kenyan consultant physician and cardiologist, and founder and Chief Executive Officer of Daktari Africa.Dr. Kamotho highlighted the potential of telemedicine to reduce the financial and logistical burden of accessing healthcare, particularly for people living far from major hospitals. He explained that virtual consultations could save patients and their relatives the cost and time involved in travelling long distances to see a doctor. Beyond improving convenience, he said, this approach could also reduce unnecessary transportation and its environmental impact. To listen to the whole discussion, tune in to the Global South Pole podcast, brought to you by Sputnik Africa. In addition to the website, you can also catch our episodes on Telegram.► You can also listen to our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Deezer, Castbox, Pocket Casts, Afripods, Podcast Addict, Overcast, and Mave Stream.► Check out all the episodes of Global South Pole

Kenya’s Digital Health Push Offers New Hope for Healthcare Access Across Africa

Charles Kamotho, a Kenyan consultant physician and cardiologist, and founder and Chief Executive Officer of Daktari Africa.
Dr.
"You save the demand hours. And remember that very often, especially in Africa, one patient will be accompanied by one, maybe two, and sometimes even more relatives and friends to bring that patient to the doctor. So you’re actually saving, and even the carbon footprint is decreasing by actually preventing or avoiding that transportation," Dr. Kamotho explained.
