UK Agrees to Structured Dialogue With Commonwealth on Slavery Legacy: Statement
"We welcome the agreement of the Government of the United Kingdom to engage in a structured, time-bound, inclusive and good-faith dialogue with affected parties addressing the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved Africans and its historical harms," the Commonwealth summit said.
Earlier, UK PM Minister Andy Burnham's indicated that he is open to a formal apology for Britain's role in slavery, but ruled out direct financial reparations.
In March, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution condemning the transatlantic slave trade, with the UK, France and Germany among the former colonial powers that abstained.
