Africa Must Stop Relying on External Funding for Hydropower, Ethiopian Minister Says
African nations must "tap into their own domestic resources if the continent is ever to unlock its vast renewable energy potential," said Dinku Seyoum, state minister of water and energy, at the 36th African Hydropower Symposium in Addis Ababa.
True energy independence begins at home, emphasized the minister, mentioning Ethiopia's experience in constructing massive renewable energy infrastructure.
Funding aside, other key priorities include:
🟠Shared power pools across the continent;
🟠Cross-border electricity trade;
🟠Unified transport logistics.
By exporting surplus clean energy, Ethiopia aims to catalyze regional economic transformation and a more peaceful, interconnected, and prosperous Africa, he noted.
Environmental stewardship
Energy expansion requires watershed management and ecosystem protection, Dinku cautioned, warning that failing to safeguard ecosystems threatens the long-term viability of Africa's water-dependent energy generation.
