SA Government Confirms AGOA Exclusion, Vows to Shield Exporters: Media
SA authorities have noted the US government's decision to exclude the country from the African Growth and Opportunity Act, which grants several African nations duty-free access to the US market, from January 1, 2027, though Pretoria's advance measures will mitigate the impact, the government's press service reported.
According to the alleged government statement, AGOA exports were worth approximately $1.7 billion in 2025, against $4 billion in 2024.
Government Response
It will continue to speed up the diversification of the country's export markets.
It will also provide support to industries affected by the US decision, Trade, Industry, and Competition Minister Parks Tau reportedly stated.
ℹ AGOA presently permits more than 30 African countries to export 6,000 categories of goods to the US duty-free, valued at approximately $9 billion annually, with 300,000 jobs in Africa directly dependent on the program. Along with South Africa, Rwanda will be excluded from AGOA on January 1, 2027.
