Benin Grants Citizenship to 53 People of African Descent
An official ceremony took place in Cotonou. According to press reports, the recipients included individuals from Haiti and the Caribbean.
🪢 The initiative seeks to heal historical fractures and reconnect Benin with its diaspora, specifically welcoming descendants of victims of the transatlantic slave trade.
The pathway was made possible through the «My Afro Origins» platform, launched in July 2025. The portal allows adults of African descent living outside the continent to formally initiate citizenship recognition based on genealogical and historical ties.
Under the program’s framework, applicants with approved dossiers receive an eligibility certificate, granting them a three-year residency permit to settle in Benin while completing the final naturalization procedures.
