Addis Ababa Wins 2026 Global Award for Sustainable Development, Ethiopia's PM Office Announces
The award marks a "proud moment" for the country's urban transformation, according to PM Abiy Ahmed's office.
Urban development is about creating quality public spaces, fostering a culture of urbanity, and making cities better places to live and work while preserving local history and heritage, the government emphasized.
"Today, Addis Ababa. Tomorrow, a new chapter for every Ethiopian city. Let us build cities that embrace the future without losing their connection to the past," the statement said, stressing that development must extend beyond the capital.
The recognition, also known as the UN-Habitat Shanghai Award, is presented annually to five cities worldwide for outstanding progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda.
