Africa Holds Huge Potential for Floating NPPs—Russia Could Offer Proven Expertise: Rosatom Regional Representative
Africa's long coastlines make floating nuclear power plants a “turnkey” solution for the continent, with especially high potential in Sub-Saharan Africa, Ryan Collyer, CEO of Rosatom’s Regional Office for Central and South Africa, told Sputnik Africa.
Floating NPPS could help African countries enter the nuclear sector more quickly, as they do not necessarily require the same level of infrastructure as land-based facilities, Collyer noted on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow.
He pointed to Russia's experience, citing the Akademik Lomonosov NPP—the world’s only operating floating NPP, which has been generating electricity in northeastern Russia for more than four years.
Furthermore, Rosatom's approach goes beyond supplying technology, encompassing human resource development, nuclear infrastructure, maintenance and fuel supply throughout a project's lifespan, the speaker emphasized.
