Looking towards the Russia-Africa Summit & Remembering Ahmed Timol
16:23 28.10.2026 (Updated: 17:06 29.10.2026) This Nnete Fela Show unpacks the Russia-Africa Summit. We also commemorate the 55th anniversary of anti-apartheid hero Ahmed Timol
We provide comprehensive coverage of the third Russia-Africa Summit from October 28 till the 29th. This high-level diplomatic Summit aims to strengthen comprehensive cooperation across politics, security, economics, science, technology and humanitarian spheres.
We begin by discussing the historical relationship between the Soviet Union and Africa.
We then unpack Russia's contemporary strategic pivot toward the continent and we look towards what might be expected from this summit, including a new action plan for 2027-2029.
Dr Ongama Mtimka from Nelson Mandela University joins the show to discuss the summit’s geopolitical significance, the need for Africa to diversify partnerships, and concerns about ensuring genuine development rather than extractive relationships.
“There has to be a mutual commitment both on the Russian and African state side to not continue to enforce the exploitative, extractive relations between Africa and the rest of the world,” Dr Mtimka says.
Later in the show we commemorate the 55th anniversary of Ahmed Timol's death. Timol was an anti-apartheid activist and teacher who was tortured and killed in police custody.
Recorded from the commemoration event, former Minister of Intelligence & veteran activist of the anti-apartheid struggle, Ronnie Kasrils delivers a powerful speech honouring Timol's courage and sacrifice, emphasising the need to guard the legacy of freedom fighters.
