AU Commission Head Calls for Russia-Africa Cooperation to Transform Agriculture
Russia has great potential to support Africa’s agricultural transformation through investment, technology transfer, and expertise, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf stated at the Russia-Africa Agro-Industrial Alliance event of the 3rd Russia–Africa Summit.
Discussing Russia-Africa trade, he noted that Africa currently imports around $100 billion in food a year, including rice, maize, wheat, and edible oils.
According to the chairperson, Africa needs to:
▪ Expand irrigation and improve access to fertilizers;
▪ Strengthen local agricultural production and value chains;
▪ Increase investment in agricultural research and technology;
▪ Develop skills and transfer expertise.
Building stronger domestic agricultural value chains would help reduce food import dependence, increase production, and strengthen Africa’s food security, he said.
The 3rd Russia-Africa Summit is taking place on October 28–29 in Moscow, where a substantial package of intergovernmental agreements and commercial contracts is expected to be signed.
