Zambia Launches First Gold Refinery to Formalize Mining and Diversify Exports: Reports
The country has officially opened its first in-country refining facility, developed by Minera Refineries Zambia Limited, the company announced during the 2026 Zambia Mining and Investment Insaka, according to local media.
Key details:
Capacity & Purity: The refinery processes gold to 99% purity, with the technology capable of reaching 99.99%. It is supported by an in-house testing laboratory.
Economic Goals: The facility aims to generate over $1.8 billion in revenue, formalize artisanal and small-scale miners, and reduce the country's reliance on copper, which currently accounts for roughly 70% of total export earnings.
Production Context: Zambia produces approximately 3.5 tonnes of gold annually. The refinery's launch marks a major step toward adding local value to its mineral resources before export.
