Decades after independence, Kenyan families are still fighting to reclaim seized land during the British colonial rule. The fight for restitution over stolen land exposes a broken promise—and asks whether reparations can restore dignity, not just compensate loss.
In this episode of Pan-African Frequency, Kenyan filmmaker Bea Wangondu talks about Kikuyu Land, her recent documentary which traces how British colonial laws seized fertile "White Highlands" from African communities and handed them to white settlers and, later, multinational tea companies. Despite a 1962 resettlement program, much land remained with elites and foreign corporations, leaving displaced families still fighting for restitution.
She explained that taking land meant taking economic capacity, livelihood, and life chances. It also meant breaking inheritance, and in Kikuyu culture, land was the main thing passed down. Without it, a person loses identity and belonging. Thus, reparations must go beyond checks and restore dignity and power.
“The point of me and the people that we build this film with is to tell the Kenyan story from our lived experiences and from our voices. This film is about reclaiming our identity, our voice, and who we are as a people, our culture. If you think about how colonialists came to many African countries, and I speak for Kenya in this case because this is where the film is based, they push you out of your own land and then claim that land to be theirs henceforth [...] if you're taking their land, you're technically taking their economic capacity. You're taking their lives, their livelihood away from them [...]. In stealing local land, you stole a people's identity. And so having a conversation around land is important because land is the soul of who we are [...] governments need to push for recognition of colonizers stealing land from Kenyans, creating a sense of accountability,” she said.
