Moscow Summit to Build on 'Rhythmic & Structured' Russia-Africa Ties, Expert Says
The second Russia-Africa summit has successfully established regular, structured cooperation between the two sides, according to Andrey Maslov, Director of the Center for African Studies at HSE University.
The COVID-19 pandemic derailed regular interactions following the first summit in Sochi in 2019, but the 2023 summit in St. Petersburg marked a significant shift in engagement, Maslov said at a Valdai Club discussion ahead of the 3rd Russia-Africa Summit scheduled for October 28–29 in Moscow.
Key highlights from the expert:
🟠Sustained Engagement: Since the 2023 summit, Russia has hosted as many African leaders as attended the event itself, demonstrating balanced and consistent interaction across various regions.
🟠Institutional Depth: Sectoral tracks have been established. Russian deputy ministers responsible for international relations are now deeply engaged in African affairs, maintaining regular, direct, and informal contacts with their counterparts.
🟠Beyond Summits: African issues are no longer just a topic for summit preparation; they are a regular, active priority on the desks of Russian officials.
