Africa Must Expand Fish Farming to Boost Its Share of Global Markets: Ugandan Fisheries Minister

Aquaculture could become a crucial alternative to traditional fishing as overfishing continues to deplete natural stocks, Robert Migadde told Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the FishGov2 Dialogue in Addis Ababa.

Uganda is targeting 1.7 million tonnes of fish exports, with 1 million tonnes expected to come from aquaculture, he noted.

Key measures proposed by the minister:

Improving post-harvest handling to meet export standards.

Coordinating efforts against illegal fishing and sharing aquaculture expertise across countries.

ℹThe FishGov2 Dialogue, held in Addis Ababa on October 20–22, brought together African ministers and directors of fisheries and aquaculture to review progress on fisheries reforms and discuss future cooperation on sustainable fisheries management and aquaculture development.
