Why Cameroon Must Develop Local Pharmaceutical Industry—Expert Explains

The development of this industry will allow for reduced costs and increased foreign exchange earnings through exports to the sub-region, journalist Victor Esso Tiki told Sputnik Africa, commenting on the progress of the construction of the Meyo drug manufacturing plant near Yaoundé.

Furthermore, the local pharmaceutical complex will offer young graduates from national universities the opportunity to practice and gain experience in this sector, he noted.

"We must encourage the industry, because a country that imports all its medicines cannot be sure it will always be in good health, as the processing conditions are not necessarily always controlled, nor is the transport, or even the storage," Tiki emphasized.

ℹ According to media reports, the Meyo pharmaceutical plant is expected to reduce heavy dependence on imported medicines, while generation approximately 1,000 direct jobs.
