This Year's El Niño Could Be Strongest in 40 Years, UN Agency Warns

Sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific could reach 3.8°C above average between November 2026 and January 2027—an unprecedented level—with the peak expected in December, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warned on Wednesday.

Global Impacts:

🟠East Africa: Above-average rainfall and heightened flood risks.

🟠Southern Africa: High probability of drought from November, threatening crops.

🟠Southeast Asia: Hotter weather, rainfall deficits, and an increased risk of wildfires.

🟠Americas: Above-normal rainfall is expected in the northwestern US, southern South America, North America, and the northern Caribbean, while drought risks increase in parts of Central America, the southern Caribbean, and the Amazon basin.

The WMO urged countries to prepare for these extreme weather shifts ahead of time.

Meanwhile, several East African countries—including Tanzania, Kenya, and Ethiopia—have already launched emergency preparations for the heavy rains.
