Zimbabwe Must Diversify Health Financing After US Aid Cutoff, Expert Says

The country must strengthen domestic healthcare financing and diversify international partnerships after US-funded health programs ended on September 30, health expert Michael Gwarisa told Sputnik Africa.

The deal Zimbabwe refused
The funding cutoff followed the collapse of negotiations over a proposed five-year, $367 million health cooperation deal, which Zimbabwe rejected over provisions requiring access to sensitive health data and biological resources.

According to Gwarisa, the abrupt withdrawal left Zimbabwe with little time to secure alternative funding arrangements, highlighting the risks of relying heavily on a single donor.

The path forward
To tackle the funding gap, the country must manage its resources efficiently and transparently to direct more funding toward healthcare, while expanding its pool of international partners to protect essential health services and prevent patients from bearing the consequences of the funding shortfall.
