Africa is Not Asking for Permission to Develop Its Energy: Head of African Energy Chamber
The continent is ready to develop its energy resources on its own terms, NJ Ayuk told Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the African Energy Week (AEW 2026) in Cape Town, emphasizing that the continent will produce every drop of oil and gas it can find to end energy poverty.
Key points from the interview:
🟠On Africa's Energy Transition: Africa cannot follow Europe's path, as it must balance hydrocarbons with renewables.
🟠On BRICS Cooperation: The African Energy Chamber is working with BRICS, including the New Development Bank. Ayuk plans to visit Russia this month for the Gas Exporting Countries Forum and the Russia-Africa Summit, aiming to secure deals for key projects, particularly in gas and fertilizer.
🟠Biggest Opportunities: Asked to sum up African energy's biggest opportunities in three words, Ayuk said, "Gas, infrastructure development, and human resource development."
The AEW 2026 brought together government representatives, state-owned companies, private businesses, and stakeholders to discuss making energy poverty history in Africa by 2030.
