Liberation to Sovereignty: Ronnie Kasrils reflects on the Soviet Union's Enduring Legacy in Africa
In this episode, Pieter Kriel sits down with Ronnie Kasrils, veteran anti-apartheid activist and former Minister of Intelligence, for a discussion on the Soviet Union’s enduring legacy in Africa, the liberation struggle, and the meaning of international solidarity today.
Ahead of the third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow on 28-29 October 2026, veteran anti-apartheid revolutionary and former South African Intelligence Minister Ronnie Kasrils sits down with Pieter Kriel to reflect on the Soviet Union's military, political and humanitarian contributions to African liberation.
Kasrils opens by recalling his 1964 training in Odessa with fellow MK cadres under Soviet officers who had fought fascism.
"We were very excited to go there, we of MK," said Kasrils. Describing how those instructors from across the Soviet Union opened minds and linked the fight against apartheid to the broader anti-imperialist cause.
Drawing on his personal experience of Soviet training and his leadership in Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the interview explores the historical foundations of Africa-Russia relations and how that legacy can inform a new era of African sovereignty, strategic independence and mutually beneficial cooperation.
The conversation covers the decisive role of Soviet, Cuban and Eastern Bloc support in Angola and Southern Africa, the 1986 meeting between Oliver Tambo and Mikhail Gorbachev, and Russia’s place in a renewed two-way street of solidarity.
Kasrils argues that the Global South and Russia need each other against Western domination:
"When we talk about solidarity being a two-way street, it’s the solidarity that goes both ways," shares Kasrils.
A reflective conversation about liberation, sovereignty, and what the Soviet legacy still means for Africa.
