This Nnete Fela episode looks at Africa’s path towards economic self-reliance through the lenses of agricultural trade and financial regional integration.
We examine the growing agricultural trade relationship between Russia and South Africa. Russia exported nearly 230,000 tons of agricultural products to South Africa in just the first nine months of 2026.

"If you look at the key exporters of wheat to the country, you will see that at the top it's Russia," Sihlobo shares.

Wandile Sihlobo, Chief Economist of the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa joins the show to break down South Africa's wheat dependency, the balanced nature of the SA-Russian trade relationship, and the opportunities for deeper BRICS cooperation in technology transfer and drought-resistant crops.

Sihlobo hopes that agricultural trade with Russia can reach half a billion dollars.

“We're just looking at the figures now, [...] around $380 million of the exports are to Russia. The hope then is that we could push that to about half a billion dollars,” Sihlobo says.

Later in the show Dawie Roodt, founder and chief economist of the Efficient Group, joins us from the Africa Credit and Risk Reporting Conference in Namibia.
Roodt discusses the urgent need for better-integrated African financial systems to reduce borrowing costs and improve credit access.
Will this give Africa financial sovereignty?
