Spain’s King Visits Ceuta and Melilla, Rekindling Sovereignty Tensions With Morocco
On Tuesday, Felipe VI began a two-day visit to Ceuta and Melilla, his first since ascending the throne in 2014.
Tense Context
🟠The visit comes three months after the massive arrival of more than 70,000 migrants to Ceuta from Morocco in late July.
🟠The last major migrant camp in Ceuta was dismantled on Sunday, two days before the king's arrival.
🟠Law enforcement rounded up the roughly 400 people present to transfer them by bus to temporary reception centers for identification and registration.
🟠A week earlier, during the dismantling of a neighboring camp at Trampolín beach, more than 1,200 migrants chose to voluntarily return to Morocco to avoid detention centers.
Moroccan Reactions
🟠King Mohammed VI of Morocco reaffirmed his partnership with Spain while rejecting any form of pressure.
🟠Meanwhile, Moroccan media described the visit as "provocative" and an attempt to impose a fait accompli on the sovereignty of these territories.
Some online users did not mince words either, denouncing colonization.
