Egypt Unveils Restored Ancient Fayum Portrait Ahead of Overseas Debut: Tourism and Antiquities Minister

The Tondo of the Two Brothers has been restored ahead of its first exhibition abroad, Sherif Fathy announced on Sunday.

The artwork will be showcased at the Ara Pacis Museum in Rome as part of “The Power of the Portrait: Egypt and Rome, Faces of Fayum.” The exhibition will also mark the first time a collection of Fayum portraits from Egyptian museums is displayed overseas.

About the Tondo portrait:

🟠Dating back to the 2nd century AD

🟠A rare circular wooden portrait

🟠Depicting two young men side by side — an unusual composition for its time

Fayum portraits were typically painted on thin wooden panels and placed over the faces of mummies, blending ancient Egyptian burial traditions with Greco-Roman artistic influences.
