'We'll Domesticate the Tools to Reflect Our Values,' Says Lesotho Tribune Publisher on AI Usage in African Media
"For a very long time, Africa has ... been a consumer. We understand we're treated as a consumer. We are often told that we have a seat on the table, which we know is not true," Phafane Nkotsi told Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the 2nd Global Digital Forum.
This forum is a good platform for such views to take root and for the Global South to be genuinely involved, not just as consumers.
Just as with COVID, Africa had a chance to leapfrog technologically, he said. The continent lacked the technology to make mRNA vaccines, and promises were made about sharing tools and setting up modules in Africa — but nothing on the ground proved the West was truly sharing. Now, with AI, there is another chance to leapfrog.
"The best tools are there. We should be given the tools. We'll domesticate the tools to reflect our values, to reflect what being a Mosotho is through the lens of Basotho, through Basotho storytellers."
