Ghana Keeps Yellow Fever Outbreak Under Control: Health Minister
Earlier this week, Ghanaian health authorities declared a yellow fever outbreak in the Upper West Region after three cases were confirmed in the laboratory, all of them fatal, amid 450 suspected cases.
Citizens should remain calm and rely on official information while health authorities intensify surveillance and vaccination efforts, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh assured.
The government is broadening a wider vaccination campaign beyond the usual childhood schedule, targeting everyone from nine months to 60 years in the areas hit by the outbreak, the minister added.
An extra 187,000 vaccine doses have been requested to support the exercise, with teams ready to start the campaign in the Upper West Region, Akandoh clarified.
Yellow fever is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes and is not spread directly from person to person.
Symptoms include fever, headache, body pains and abdominal discomfort, while severe cases may develop bleeding.
