Uganda Launches New Ebola Vaccines Trials Amid DR Congo Outbreak: AU Public Health Agency

Targeting the Bundibugyo Ebola virus, the vaccine, which was developed by the University of Oxford, has entered Phase Ib trials, while another candidate developed by Moderna has received approval to begin the same phase of testing, Africa CDC announced on Thursday.

The trials come as the DR Congo battles an outbreak of the Bundibugyo virus, for which no specifically approved vaccine or treatment currently exists.

Outbreak figures, according to DRC health authorities:

🟠8,728 confirmed cases

🟠4,205 deaths

🟠48.2% case fatality rate

🟠2,269 recoveries

Meanwhile, the DR Congo has received 70,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine, although its effectiveness against the Bundibugyo strain has not been established.
