The African Union has officially launched the Africa Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA).
Launched on October 7 in Port Louis, Mauritius, the AfCRA is being described as a bold step toward greater African agency, stronger financial sovereignty, and ownership of Africa's economic narrative. Established to offer impartial, reliable, and Africa-focused evaluations of creditworthiness, its goals are to address information gaps, improve Africa's financial infrastructure, and ensure that African companies, sovereigns, and sub-sovereigns are properly evaluated in global financial markets. By providing a viewpoint based on African facts, knowledge, and realities, AfCRA enhances the work of current international credit rating organizations. It is a development Dr. Oscar van Heerden, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for African Diplomacy and Leadership at the University of Johannesburg, believes is a test case for a changing Africa. In this episode of the Redrawn Africa podcast, we explore what the AfCRA means for the continent and why it is being described as a pivotal moment in Africa's long struggle for financial sovereignty.► You can also listen to our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Deezer, Castbox, Pocket Casts, Afripods, Podcast Addict, and Overcast.► Check out all the episodes of Redrawn Africa Podcast

It is a development Dr. Oscar van Heerden, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for African Diplomacy and Leadership at the University of Johannesburg, believes is a test case for a changing Africa.
In this episode of the Redrawn Africa podcast, we explore what the AfCRA means for the continent and why it is being described as a pivotal moment in Africa's long struggle for financial sovereignty.
"We shouldn't be naive. Obviously, the Europeans and the Americans are going to try and cast aspersions on our own credit ratings agency, but we need to study the course. We need to stay the course because at the end of the day, it's our banks, and it's all our financial systems that are going to rely on this credit ratings agency more and more. They're not going to ignore the American and European ones, but they are going to say to those, We also take cognizance of our own credit rating agency because we believe in their data, we believe that they're making the right call, and therefore we're going to base our decisions on that," said Dr. Van Heerden.
