This Nnete Fela Show discusses the newly established African Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA). We also unpack the latest developments in the diplomatic row between South Africa and the USA.
Major western credit rating agencies often misunderstand African economies and apply Western-centric methodologies to analysis of Africa, resulting in unfairly low ratings for African countries.Recognising this the African Union has established the African Credit Rating Agency which aims to provide more contextual, nuanced assessments of African economies and rate 23 African countries that currently have no ratings.Unlike privately owned western agencies, the African agency is multilaterally owned by the continent, headquartered in Mauritius, and operates independently.Economist Redge Nkosi joins the show to discuss how the agency could become a "developmental agent" rather than an "agent of exploitation," emphasising the importance of African governments actually using it.Later in the show we examine the escalating tensions between the US and South Africa. Will the African Credit Rating Agency be a success? Africa’s Own Credit Rating Agency & US-SA Diplomatic Tensions
13:41 08.10.2026 (Updated: 13:57 02.11.2026) This Nnete Fela Show discusses the newly established African Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA). We also unpack the latest developments in the diplomatic row between South Africa and the USA.
Major western credit rating agencies often misunderstand African economies and apply Western-centric methodologies to analysis of Africa, resulting in unfairly low ratings for African countries.
Recognising this the African Union has established the African Credit Rating Agency which aims to provide more contextual, nuanced assessments of African economies and rate 23 African countries that currently have no ratings.
Unlike privately owned western agencies, the African agency is multilaterally owned by the continent, headquartered in Mauritius, and operates independently.
Economist Redge Nkosi joins the show to discuss how the agency could become a "developmental agent" rather than an "agent of exploitation," emphasising the importance of African governments actually using it.
“If the African Union is serious as the continental body of governments. It is them, the governments of Africa, that will have to sit down to say […] we have to rely on our rating agency,” Nkosi says.
Later in the show we examine the escalating tensions between the US and South Africa.
Will the African Credit Rating Agency be a success?
Will the US and SA fix their problems?
