Ethiopia Reaffirms Its Geographic, Historical Rights to Nile and Red Sea: MFA

Regional discussions must recognize Ethiopia's fundamental geographic realities, the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The statement follows the Alamein summit of Egypt, Eritrea, Sudan, and Somalia, where they declared that Red Sea governance belongs "exclusively" to its bordering states and reaffirmed their commitment to the cooperative management of the Nile River.

The Ethiopian Foreign Ministry highlighted these core realities:

🟠The Nile: Ethiopia is the source of the Blue Nile, which provides 85% of the river's total flow.

🟠The Red Sea: Ethiopia’s border is just 30 miles from the Red Sea coast, giving it a legitimate stake in regional maritime security.

The ministry stressed that political rhetoric, coercion, or proxy aggression cannot alter these facts or diminish Ethiopia's rights, while reaffirming its commitment to peaceful dialogue and good neighborliness.

Ethiopia has repeatedly rejected accusations from several countries regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, arguing that the project benefits downstream nations while firmly opposing any restrictions on its right to use the Nile's waters.
