Putin's Valdai Speech Shows Russia's Priorities in African Development: SA Researcher

Beyond UNSC reform, African influence needs stronger collective representation in global financial, trade, tech, and regulatory systems, Research Fellow of the BRICS Research Institute Dylan Mangena told Sputnik Africa.

"The BRICS and the related Global South institutions provide additional platforms through which African states can diversify and articulate development priorities."

Russia-Africa development partnership is vital with investment in local manufacturing, infrastructure, technical education, research institutions, and technology transfer, Mangena noted.

These should be joint ventures allowing African firms to gain capabilities rather than remain subcontractors or commodity suppliers, with African ownership, capability building, and measurable value retention as core principles, the researcher said.

Partnerships with Russia and Global South actors are also important for training, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and tech, if agreements include knowledge transfer and local capacity building, he added.

Africa can push ceasefire diplomacy, preventive engagement, humanitarian access, and negotiated settlements while keeping strategic autonomy, Mangena noted.

"The objective should be an international system in which African states are rule makers and agenda setters rather than primarily rule takers."
