Experts have described the recent roll out of the AES biometric passport as a document that is worth more than a travel permit.
This follows the completion of a process that began with Burkina Faso in January 2025, Mali in October 2025, and then Niger in September 2026.A development, Jonis Ghedi-Alasow, Coordinator of the Pan Africanism Today Secretariat, on this episode of the Redrawn Africa podcast, believes is a test case for a changing Africa.Ghedi-Alasow was clear that the Alliance of Sahel States cannot be understood in binary terms, as simply "good" or "bad." It must be understood in the context of poverty, war, and a 500-year path that the AES has chosen to reject.

This follows the completion of a process that began with Burkina Faso in January 2025, Mali in October 2025, and then Niger in September 2026.
A development, Jonis Ghedi-Alasow, Coordinator of the Pan Africanism Today Secretariat, on this episode of the Redrawn Africa podcast, believes is a test case for a changing Africa.
Ghedi-Alasow was clear that the Alliance of Sahel States cannot be understood in binary terms, as simply "good" or "bad." It must be understood in the context of poverty, war, and a 500-year path that the AES has chosen to reject.
"There's a connection between Dubois and the and Padmore and the early Pan-Africanists like Nkrumah and many others and what we are seeing in the AES today. But I also think there are a few things that we have to bear in mind. When Krumah was arguing in his inaugural speech at the Organization of African Unity for a United States of Africa, where the wealth of the continent is socialized among its people, he was doing that in conditions that were very different from the ones confronting the AES today. When Thomas Sankara was standing at the same OAU arguing for a repudiation of the debt three months before he was killed in 1987, it was again on different conditions. In other words, we are confronted by a world where, if I'm saying to you, for example, the project that's being built by the AES is being built under conditions of war. Those are very different conditions to the ones that have confronted others. So there are some differences, especially in the specificities of the AES and geopolitically," says Ghedi Alasow.
