Across Africa, advances in science, engineering, and emerging technologies are creating new possibilities for strengthening defense and security. Yet turning research and prototypes into technologies that can be tested, manufactured, financed, and deployed requires stronger links between researchers, defense institutions, industry, and investment.
The challenge is therefore not simply whether African countries can develop sophisticated technologies, but whether they can build the wider ecosystem needed to move those technologies from the laboratory into sustained operational use.Global South Pole hosted Dr. Mphahlela James Thaba, an Impact Area Manager for Technology for Special Operations at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in South Africa, to discuss Africa’s defense innovation ecosystem, the transition from prototypes to operational capabilities, the role of artificial intelligence, and how African countries can build stronger cooperation around indigenous technological capabilities. Thaba said Africa already has researchers, engineers, universities, defense companies, startups, and other institutions developing increasingly sophisticated technologies. However, these capabilities often operate separately. He argued that an effective defense innovation ecosystem must connect operational requirements with research, experimentation, testing, certification, industrialization, financing, procurement, and long-term support. He said the continent should ultimately aim to build a continuous innovation cycle in which technologies are developed, deployed, evaluated, and improved, allowing African countries to increasingly develop and manufacture technologies suited to their own security environments. To listen to the whole discussion, tune in to the Global South Pole podcast, brought to you by Sputnik Africa. In addition to the website, you can also catch our episodes on Telegram.► You can also listen to our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Deezer, Castbox, Pocket Casts, Afripods, Podcast Addict, Overcast, and Mave Stream.► Check out all the episodes of Global South Pole

Across Africa, advances in science, engineering, and emerging technologies are creating new possibilities for strengthening defense and security. Yet turning research and prototypes into technologies that can be tested, manufactured, financed, and deployed requires stronger links between researchers, defense institutions, industry, and investment.
The challenge is therefore not simply whether African countries can develop sophisticated technologies, but whether they can build the wider ecosystem needed to move those technologies from the laboratory into sustained operational use.
Global South Pole hosted Dr.
"If we can achieve that, then Africa moves from being predominantly a consumer of defense technology towards becoming increasingly a developer, integrator, manufacturer, and potentially an exporter of technologies suited for the African security environment. And I think that is ultimately what the African defense innovation ecosystem should deliver," Dr. Thaba expressed.
