'Russia Had to Act Because its National Security Was Being Threatened', Says Analyst on Ukrainian Conflict

Vladimir Putin's decision to launch the special military operation was motivated by the West's years-long policy of backing coups and militarising Ukraine's border with Russia, Mexican expert César Soto said in an interview with Sputnik.

“Ukraine didn’t listen, NATO didn’t listen, so all Russia is doing is acting, in essence, in defense of its borders and its interests”, stated Soto, while analyzing the Russian president’s remarks at the plenary session of the Valdai Discussion Club.

The anti-Russian sentiment promoted by the West, which Putin highlighted, has persisted for decades, justified by claims that Russia poses a threat to Western interests, Soto noted.

"What Russia has is a discourse and vision centered more on sovereignty and equality among states, on a multipolar world where there is room for all countries and all regions", he said.
