AU Calls on Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt, to Exercise Maximum Restraint
Earlier, the Eritrean Foreign Ministry announced the severing of diplomatic relations with Ethiopia in response to the declaration of a group of its diplomats as persona non grata.
The Egyptian media reported that Cairo and Asmara are engaging in the mutual expulsion of diplomats.
The AU Comission said that it was ready, through consultations with the countries concerned, to support efforts towards de-escalation, dialogue and peaceful resolution of differences.
Relations between Eritrea and Ethiopia have been tense since 1993, when Eritrea officially declared independence. An armed conflict between the two over control of border territories lasted from 1998 to 2000, followed by a peace deal in 2018.
More recently, Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of backing insurgency in the northern Ethiopian region of Tigray.
