This Nnete Fela show explores what needs to be done to improve African trade using the AfCFTA and elaborates on the latest South African Reserve Bank's quarterly bulletin and financial regional integration.
Chris Hart, CEO of Africa Growth Capital, joins the show to unpack why African trade still struggles even with the Africa continental free trade area in place. He argues that Regional integration is a logistical and infrastructure problem, not just a policy one.
He also mentions some of the other difficulties which make intra African trade inefficient such manual paperwork.
“The sheer amount of paperwork that gets involved and some of it's very manual paperwork that's done. So this is why […] putting it on an electronic platform is in fact a huge step in the right direction,” Hart says.
Later in the show we discuss South Africa's economy which contracted 0.2% in Q2 2026, driven by global conflicts and geopolitical pressures. We also discuss the importance of regional financial integration.
The SADC RTGS System, a regional payment system now incorporating the Angolan Kwanzaa, the first non-Rand currency, enabling faster, cheaper cross-border transactions.
We discuss this move in the context of the growing need for de-dollarisation.
