As African countries seek to accelerate infrastructure development and industrialization, BRICS and its New Development Bank are emerging as important avenues for financing. A researcher at the BRICS Research Institute says the bloc could give African states greater room to pursue development priorities through expanded South-South cooperation.
Global South Pole spoke to Dr. Dylan Mangani, an expert in international relations, security, and governance and a research fellow at the BRICS Research Institute in South Africa, about the growing role of BRICS and the New Development Bank in Africa’s development financing landscape. Mangani said the NDB could become an important pillar of a diversified financial architecture for Africa, particularly by supporting infrastructure, sustainable development, and productive sectors. As African countries seek to accelerate infrastructure development and industrialization, BRICS and its New Development Bank are emerging as important avenues for financing. A researcher at the BRICS Research Institute says the bloc could give African states greater room to pursue development priorities through expanded South-South cooperation.
Global South Pole spoke to Dr. Dylan Mangani, an expert in international relations, security, and governance and a research fellow at the BRICS Research Institute in South Africa, about the growing role of BRICS and the New Development Bank in Africa’s development financing landscape.
Mangani said the NDB could become an important pillar of a diversified financial architecture for Africa, particularly by supporting infrastructure, sustainable development, and productive sectors. He argued that African governments should use the opportunities offered by BRICS to secure investments that support industrial priorities, create local employment, transfer skills, and strengthen productive capacity.
"The cooperation that comes from the BRICS is often framed around partnerships and is very important to underscore that part among developing and emerging economies rather than the conventional donor-client relationship that we have previously had," Dr. Mangani explained.
