SA Teachers Are 'Going Far Beyond the Call of Duty,' Says SA Basic Education Minister

Siviwe Gwarube, in the interview with Sputnik Africa, at the 26th Annual National Teaching Awards in Benoni, Gauteng, praised teachers' work for building South Africa's future.

"We can actually have that platform whereby teachers are not just trained when they're going to university but also trained to cater for learners with special education needs," Gold Achievement Award winner in the Inclusive Education Teaching category Tshepang Olifants shared with Sputnik Africa.

Phillip Dikgomo, Director of Teacher Development and Implementation at the SA Department of Basic Education, explained at the awards that a range of programs exists for teachers—among them an online development platform where resources are shared, allowing them to identify learner talent and support all students regardless of ability level.

Young people are increasingly taking part in the awards, he noted, with this year's winners all under 35. The Department of Basic Education would like to use them as ambassadors to influence more and more teachers to participate in the program, the director added.
