Algeria to Strengthen Its Sovereignty Through Railway Development: Local Expert
The railway modernization program forms the backbone of Algeria's territorial and economic restructuring, Saci Idir told Sputnik Africa.
At the heart of the program is the railway linking Tamanrasset in the far south to the north, opening Algeria to its African depth. The project was made a national priority by President Tebboune, targeting service by the end of 2028 across three sections: Laghouat–Ghardaïa–El Meniaa, El Meniaa–Kilometer Point 216, and Tamanrasset–Moulay Lahcen.
According to the expert, the program's contribution to economic development includes:
connecting the north of the country, the Hautes Plaines, and the Great Algerian South, notably to support mining and industrial activities;
reducing logistics costs;
further opening Algeria to the African market, making the country a logistics hub for the Sahel and sub-Saharan Africa.
With Russia, opportunities for cooperation "remain open," but Algeria prioritizes technology transfer and local industrial integration, he said.
