Can the UN Still Deliver: Looking Back on the 81st UNGA
17:00 30.09.2026 (Updated: 17:09 12.10.2026) This Nnete Fela Show looks back on the UN General Assembly where wars, inequality and geopolitical tensions are testing the international system. African countries are calling for reform, greater representation and a fairer global financial architecture.
The 81st UN General Assembly comes at a time of growing distrust in multilateral institutions, ongoing conflicts, the crisis in Palestine, rising military spending, climate change and the rapid development of artificial intelligence.
We discuss how the leaders of the world addressed these problems. South Africa has called for reforms to global governance, including the UN Security Council, while placing inequality and debt at the center of its international agenda.
"The promise of democracy and international cooperation wanes when we cannot demonstrate that they can address inequality and insecurity," SA Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola told the Assembly.
With António Guterres delivering his final General Assembly address as UN Secretary-General, attention is also turning to the future of the organization and the question of who will lead it next.
Can the UN restore trust and remain relevant in an increasingly divided world?
