Africa’s Cashew Industry Could Become a Model for Agro-Industrialisation

Africa is a major force in the global cashew industry, producing more than half of the world’s raw cashew supply. But much of the economic opportunity lies beyond cultivation, as processing can create new products, jobs, industries, and revenue while allowing more value from the crop to remain within African economies.
Across the continent, countries are increasingly looking at how to move further along the cashew value chain, from raw production to processing and manufacturing. Cashew can generate a wide range of products beyond the familiar edible nut, including juice, butter, milk, and cashew nut shell liquid, creating opportunities for broader industrial development.
Global South Pole spoke to Dr. David Oladunjoye Olurin, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Cardinal Torch Company Limited, Nigeria, to examine how African countries can capture more value from cashew production and strengthen their agro-industrial sectors.
Olurin argued that African countries need to move beyond exporting raw agricultural commodities and invest in processing, technology, infrastructure, and finance. He pointed to Côte d’Ivoire’s expanding cashew-processing sector as an example for other countries to study, while stressing that private-sector participation would be central to building competitive industries. He also highlighted the potential of cashew byproducts, including juice, butter, milk, and cashew nut shell liquid, saying the wider value chain could create additional commercial opportunities and jobs.

"Africa must begin to process what it grows. And that’s the only way you can capture value and develop the economy of Africa as a whole. Value addition is what helps the economy to grow, create jobs, and also build industrialization across the board," Olurin said.
