How SA Can Shield Vital Research From Foreign Capital Dependence—Science Minister Outlines Key Recommendations
Being a developing country, South Africa cannot totally reject foreign aid, but it must diversify its research funding to avoid over-reliance on any single bloc of countries, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Blade Nzimande said, answering Sputnik Africa's question.
Other recommendations from the minister to safeguard the nation's scientific ecosystem include:
🟠Boosting domestic funding for scientific research;
🟠Securing robust agreements to sustain the national research system;
🟠Safeguarding critical platforms in health, genomics, biotechnology, and public health;
🟠Scaling up public and private investment in research;
🟠Enhancing coordination among government, scientific institutions, and industry;
🟠Preventing the leakage of South Africa’s intellectual property abroad.
The minister outlined this strategy during a press conference following the Ministerial Working Group report on South Africa’s Science Funding Sovereignty.
