Former Journalist Crowned King of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom: Local Media
Edward Rukidi Nyaibongo I, formerly Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, succeeded Oyo Nyimba Kabamba as king of the traditional Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda, local media reported.
The coronation was held at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal and was attended by President Yoweri Museveni and thousands of residents following 24 hours of traditional rites.
🟠Succession Dispute: Nyaibongo was elected by the royal Babito clan after the death of King Oyo in August. However, the late king’s mother contests the choice, claiming Oyo named a son as his heir—a claim the clan denies.
🟠Cultural Influence: While Uganda’s traditional kingdoms hold no political power, they remain vital to the nation's social and cultural fabric.
In his first address, the new monarch called for unity and the preservation of Tooro’s rich heritage, according to the media.
