US primacy fades amid deepening multipolarity - expert
The US built its security strategy around the idea that American global primacy guarantees stability, but that model is becoming harder to sustain as power shifts across Eurasia, University of South-Eastern Norway professor Glenn Diesen told Sputnik on the sidelines of the Valdai Discussion Club.
Diesen pointed to three major Eurasian power centers: Russia, China, and Iran, arguing that US efforts to weaken or contain them have failed to restore Washington’s former dominance.
He said the next consequence could be growing strain inside the US alliance system, especially where countries have tied their security too closely to Washington.
“A powerful hegemon, good idea. A declining one is a disaster,” Diesen said, adding that similar debates could increasingly emerge in the Gulf, East Asia, and Europe.
His broader point is that countries may begin seeking more diversified security arrangements instead of relying on a single external guarantor.
