Cape Verde Goalkeeper Vozinha Says He Misses Life Before World Cup Fame
The 40-year-old goalkeeper, one of the breakout stars of the 2026 World Cup, has admitted he is struggling to cope with his newfound fame and would prefer to return to his life before the tournament.
"I’ve lost my peace and tranquillity," Vozinha told a British newspaper. "I no longer have any privacy, or at least much less than I used to. Now I go out, I go to a restaurant, and there’s always someone who wants to take a photo with me or asks me for an autograph. Or, worse, someone is filming me."
He said that if given the choice, he would pick his old life over his current one.
His World Cup Breakthrough
Vozinha made seven saves in Cape Verde's 0-0 draw with eventual champions Spain in the group stage and was named man of the match. The team finished second in Group H before losing to Argentina 3-2 in extra time in the round of 32.
Records and Recognition
During the tournament, he became the most-followed goalkeeper on one of his social media accounts with over 28 million followers and was named to the fans' symbolic World Cup team. After the tournament, he signed with the Chilean club Colo-Colo.
