Across Africa, innovation is increasingly emerging from practical needs and everyday challenges. Researchers, engineers and self-taught innovators are developing solutions in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, financial technology and artificial intelligence.
Africa’s innovation landscape is being shaped by its particular circumstances, including resource constraints, a large and growing young population, expanding digital markets, and significant natural resources. These conditions are creating opportunities for locally developed solutions to address problems within Africa while potentially finding applications elsewhere. The Global South Pole podcast engaged Mark Kaigwa, founder and CEO of Nendo, a Nairobi-based research, marketing, and communications agency focused on African insights, trends, and digital behavior, to discuss the continent’s innovation potential and the challenges of moving ideas from prototypes to markets. The conversation also examined investment, intellectual property, artificial intelligence, and the importance of storytelling in shaping how African innovation is understood globally. Kaigwa said Africa’s relatively undocumented knowledge, languages, and cultural history could become an important asset in the age of artificial intelligence, particularly as existing AI systems often lack sufficient African context. "I think storytelling is essential. I feel, thankfully, that's one of our competitive advantages as the African continent. I think we are not just the birthplace of mankind but also the birthplace of story and narrative. In fact, I feel that the hidden advantage for Africa in an AI age for the coming decade is that Africa has a set of knowledge and ideas and history that is not documented. That's often been one of the weaknesses or challenges some people say, but for us, I think it's the hidden advantage because it means that our languages right now to say are the least incorporated into the training data of many of these large language models," Kaigwa emphasized.
