What does an election look like in a region that the world has been told is too dangerous to vote in?
That was one of the questions a prominent Kenyan parliamentary delegation set out to answer when they arrived in Russia to observe the 2026 State Duma elections.In this episode of the Redrawn Africa podcast, the delegation shares their experience.For the delegation that included Ahmad Abdulaziz Kadhi, a lawyer, Parliamentary Secretary of the National Assembly of Kenya, and Executive Secretary of the Russia-Africa Parliamentary Group, the election was not merely a political exercise, but a moment of collective healing.The atmosphere was no different for Khatib Omar, a parliamentary officer from the Senate of Kenya and secretary of the Public Investment Committee, who reflects on what he described as an impressive turnout of women at polling stations. "We went to one of the voting centers, which is a cultural center, and just above the cultural center there is a special floor, a big hall with pictures of women, mothers who were holding pictures of their sons who had been killed by the Ukrainian forces. So it's a bit painful, but it's a long history of aggression, a long history of provocations. I guess this would just be another chance for them to try and break the spirit of the women because the women are the ones who are suffering the most," Kadhi said.
