'Permanent Seat Without Veto Would Be Nothing More Than Decorative Folding Seat': Expert on Finland's Proposal
ℹ Speaking at the 81st session of the General Assembly, Finland's president insisted on giving at least two new permanent seats to Africa, two to Asia-Pacific, and one to Latin America, underlining that "no single state should have veto power."
The solution that would satisfy Africa will be the one advocated by the AU, including two permanent seats with veto power and five non-permanent seats, argued Mohamed Lamine Kaba, a specialist in geopolitics of governance and regional integration, speaking to Sputnik Africa.
"This is the only position worth defending, because it rejects the logic of a cut-rate seat," Kaba said.
Russia's Stance on Expansion and Veto
Moscow also "supports enlargement to new permanent members while defending the retention of the right of veto for all permanent members, old and new," he added.
